Due to the radio hunt I found out it's originally a Clarion E950. So that helped in further finding detailed information. The following link provided a very nice overview of the 900 series:

The following link was also a very good one. And it's show the E950 model was released in 1983/84.
Meaning it would be appropiate for my XJS

And till now the only picture I could find with the actual radio build in:
Last week I was Lucky to find one on Ebay. And it arrived yesterday. It came completely with a mounting bracket. Unfortunately no owners manual so I need to find that seperately.
On the back I noticed this loose red cable. I'm unsure what it's used for. The same for the adjustable potmeter. Hopefuly if I find the manual I will be able to find out:
Today I have connected the radio and all was working fine. Except the cassette autoreserve seems to be broken but I'm not overly concerned about that. Building the radio into the frame was a different matter. When checking I figured that the mouting frame would cause the radio to stick out which I thought was incorrect. Now when writing this all up and also see the example picture above it does look like this how it's suppose to be. Instead I have been using the "sliding frame" from the previous radio which was still in. This was a lot of hassle and also would result in the frame being visible. I didn't push it in completely as it was all very tight and I feared it would be completely stuck. So I left it without completely inserted and wanted to have it doublechecked first. At least I'm now able to listen to the radio. Also I'm not completely dissatisfied with the looks. So I took the opportunity to take the car out for a spin this afternoon.
You can see on this picture the metal frame sticking out on the outside. This can't be right, either.

With this I learned there should be an additional frame cover to be included, see item 3 in the picture below:
This is a so called escutcheon (surround trim) and having part number: JLM407. So this is what I need to have. So I think I can remove the sliding cover, put on the Original mounting bracket and fit it in. And finish it with this additional frame ...
I was Lucky to just find such frame on https://shop.everydayxj.com/ So I just ordered it. But guess what, it appeared it was not on stock after all ... so the hunt continues.
