10 affordable classic cars to buy before it’s too late

Well, today another article on worthy classisc to buy which is including the XJS again:

Ageing impressively, the Big Cat renaissance is in full force, with demand consistently rising for these capable grand tourers — their opulent interior, capacious boot, and rakish style is no longer going unnoticed. Of course, the V12 is the engine to go for, preferably a pre-HE (high efficiency) model, with the smooth power delivery and effortless torque more than making up for the time spent in the petrol station…

I do agree to go for a V12 but I'm not sure about the pre-HE though (unless you want to have a manual shifter). Personally I don't fancy the rims, bumpers and the interior. I do like the HE model much more.

6 young classics worth investing in, right now

Somehow my radar caugth this older article from August 2014. It only caught it due to the fact it has a Ferrari 400 in it. Not sure why it pops up now though. But Google displayed this golden XJS for this article. So I figured to include on this blog as well. As for the 400 it seems true it has been risen in value. I don't think it's true for the XJS (yet). Maybe only marginal.

more antenna

The new ordered antenna arrived earlier this week and today I have been installing it. Unfortunately and as expected the replacement model was slightly different. Especially to get the motor properly connected to the original holding bar had to be reworked. Luckily it did came with some small bar which I bend and fixed it the Original holder. Now it's nicely attached and in the correct location. I'm not sure how this was supposed to be fitted with only that pre-drilled strip. The new antenna did also came with a strap-on "12 sec delay switch/relais". I feared that the old was flaky and maybe had to order a new one as well. But this was now not needed. Also the old wiring could be reused and hooked up simply. When all was connected up I turned on the radio and it was working perfectly. Really pleased with this small job. However when further working out the radio cabling and speakers it came to light the radio seems not to be 100% functioning. When on radio mode there was no sound. But when using the cassetteplayer the sound was ok. Bummer! By now I also found out the radio was missing a specific front cover. So now I need to hunt for complete new one again. Sigh!

Antenna

Yesterday I have been "working" on the XJS. A while ago I managed to get ahold of the time period official Jaguar cassette radio. More on that in a different upcoming blog. As I was trying to connect it up I of course had to work out all the wiring and connectors as the previous owner had been messing around. One wire I was not sure about was the one needed for the Antenna. There were two wires with the same color code (white/red). After measuring them I figured out one of them was 12V from the ignition. So when hooking all up the radio worked. But the antenna did not work, sigh. So I left it and looked into it yesterday. When working previously in the trunk I had already noticed the antenna motor was hanging loose and not firmly attached to the frame:

When further looking into the wiring I could see there was also a white/red wire going into the relais. So that was the correct wire. A simple check of the wire with a fuseboxholder learned me it was without fuse. That explains. Clearly they have been messing with this as well. When placing a fuse and connecting the earth wire the antenna motor started spinning or at least making that type of noise. But the antenna itself did not move. So I figured to completely dismantle the system and further inspect it.

When opening up the mechanism all looked ok, ie: no broken wire or damaged wheels. I couldn't work out the failure. Clearly something had to be broken else they wouldn't have removed the fuse. The other strange thing was that the antenna motor started making the spinning noise instantly when connected (and radio turned off).

By now I figured not to waste anymore time on this old piece and have it replaced by a shiny new one. The old one had code DAC3542 placed on it. When checking at SNG Barratt it has been superseded by DAC4090. So I have ordered one and hope to have it installed next weekend.

Keycode tag - Keyprof Luke

Today I went to Interclassics at the MECC in Maastricht. At this event I visited a carkey specialist to get some spare keys created. I also brought my XJS sparekey set with me as I wanted to have something checked. The keyring has one small iron tag with a keycode on it. And I was curious to know if it belonged to one of the keys. And if so, which one. He had it checked and it belongs to the ignition key. Nice to have this Original tag with the keys as well.

Burberry Jaguar XJSC

I came across this Burberry advert with the XJS as a prop. Thought it was a cool one to share.
